Join us for a spooky-but-not-too-spooky Halloween morning adventure at one of Loveland’s most iconic landscapes: Devil’s Backbone Open Space!
What better place to celebrate Halloween than a trail with Devil in the name? We'll hike the beautiful Indian Summer Loop, a 6.2-mile route featuring dramatic rock formations, rolling grasslands, sweeping mountain views, and maybe a few stories about what might be lurking among the ancient rocks. (Probably just hawks and rabbits... probably. 😏)
This trail gains about 734 feet in elevation and typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours, making it the perfect "just challenging enough" adventure for first-time hikers and experienced trail wanderers alike.
🎃 A Trail with Ancient Halloween Vibes
Devil’s Backbone is famous for its towering hogback rock formation, a 100-million-year-old geologic spine created by ancient seas, tectonic upheaval, and enough time to make any ghost feel young. Keep your eyes open for red-tailed hawks soaring overhead, fascinating rock formations, and panoramic views stretching across the Front Range.
The trail is well-maintained, but expect rocky terrain, minimal shade, and the occasional rattlesnake sighting. Don't worry, they're generally not interested in joining our Halloween festivities, and we'll give them plenty of space.
🧡 Event Details
Distance: 6.2 miles

Time: Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours
Entry Fee: $10 per vehicle (credit card only)
Water: Available at the trailhead, but bring plenty for the hike.

Because Devil’s Backbone is a popular destination, trails may temporarily close when parking reaches capacity. If that happens, we'll simply pivot to another nearby open space and continue the adventure.
