Get ready for an adventure through one of Loveland’s most iconic landscapes, the Devil’s Backbone Indian Summer Loop! This 6.2‑mile trail winds through rolling grasslands, dramatic rock formations, and wide‑open Colorado skies. With 734 feet of elevation gain and a 2.5–3 hour hiking time, it’s the perfect “just challenging enough” outing for both new hikers and seasoned trail lovers.
This open space is famous for its towering hogback rock formation, a 100‑million‑year‑old geologic spine created by ancient seas, shifting tectonic plates, and a whole lot of time. Along the way, you might spot red‑tailed hawks circling overhead, wildflowers brushing the trail, and long views stretching toward the Rockies.
The trail is well‑maintained, but expect rocky terrain, minimal shade, and the possibility of rattlesnake sightings (they usually mind their own business, but we’ll stay aware). Starting early is recommended to beat the heat and enjoy the quiet morning light.
Entry Fee: $10 per vehicle (credit card only).
Water: Available at the trailhead — but bring plenty for the hike.
Pets: Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed at all times.
Devil’s Backbone Open Space is popular, so if the parking lot is full, the trails are at capacity. If that happens, we’ll pivot to another nearby open space, but fingers crossed for good timing.
