The Apgar Lookout Trail is a semi-popular out and back hike in Glacier National Park — you can expect to get your sweat on over this 11 mile RT hike but also enjoy meadows and vistas that include Lake McDonald and Howe Ridge. We will be hiking through the meadows and regrowth from the 2003 Robert Fire. After a warm up of about 2 miles the trail begins a steady climb up the southwestern slopes of the mountain. Over the next 2.7 miles we will ascend nearly 1700 feet to reach the ridge just below the lookout. The lookout (no longer in use but is considered an historical structure, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) sits on an east facing ridge roughly 200 feet below the actual summit of Apgar Mountain. By starting later, the views and photo opportunities weill be better so make sure to bring along a camera!
